Confronting the day to day problems of life, we all benefit from having as a model, someone who is like ourselves but who has successfully dealt with the challenges we face. Yes, the soldier does need a hero, but so does everyone else. We are proud of these select few who become models for our soldiers everywhere….heroes who are studied and emulated admired and honored throughout history and about whom books are written and for whom ships and buildings are named and monuments in marble are erected in public places. These men and women who have performed incredible acts of bravery or other outstanding service under the most trying conditions, surprisingly often comment … "I only did what I had to do ….I did what was right ….I did all that I could."Īnd we listen with awe and respect and accept their simple declarations, certain that they are motivated by humility and could never really explain how or why they are now recognized as heroes and heroines. Always impressive, these ceremonies are conducted to recognize the individual or team accomplishments of men and women who have performed their assigned missions with deeds described as being "above and beyond the call of duty." Many of the recipients of these medals receive them posthumously, having made the ultimate sacrifice by giving their lives to accomplish their assigned missions.Īfter the laudatory remarks of the General officers, the reading of the orders and the presentation of medals, these decorated heroes and heroines are often asked to say a few words to all present. In that capacity I have participated in many award ceremonies in which military personnel were decorated with medals and honored for heroism in battle or for extraordinary service to the Army and our Nation. Amen.įor the past 26 years I have had the privilege of serving our Nation in uniform and as a civilian Command Counsel of the US Army Materiel Command. Let us serve you by serving others, and when you will, allow us, redeemed by Christ your Son, to be with you forever in heaven. You have given each of us missions to fulfill in our lifetimes help us accept those responsibilities and come to know you better. Lord, you gave your servant Rose unique missions during her lifetime as a daughter, wife and mother, which you helped her successfully fulfill. Heavenly Father, give me the grace to find the words this morning that will help us understand that every person who enters this world and walks in your grace, acts in your name and touches the lives of others in ways we do not always comprehend. In the name of the Father… and of the Son …and of the Holy Spirit.
